A Used Vac Truck Is a Good Deal Only If Someone Goes Through It.

Three situations we see every month, and what we do about each.

You just bought a used truck

It ran at the auction. Now the blower is noisy, the door leaks vacuum, three hydraulic hoses are weeping and nobody knows when the water pump was last serviced. We go through every system and hand you a prioritized list: safety first, then what stops work, then what can wait.

Your truck was wrecked

Rollover, rear-end collision, boom strike, backed into something at 2 a.m. The insurer wants a number and the crew wants the truck. We assess frame, tank, boom, blower and harness, write the estimate, and rebuild what is worth rebuilding.

Your older truck needs a second life

A sound ten-year-old hydrovac with a rebuilt blower, resealed pump and cylinders, new door gasket and a clean DOT sheet can run for years. A planned refurbishment costs a fraction of a new unit and you already know the truck.

What a Vacuum Truck Refurbishment Covers

Every refurbishment starts with an inspection and a written estimate broken out by system. You choose how far to go. This is the full scope.

Chassis & driveline

  • Frame and crossmember inspection, crack repair, corrosion treatment
  • Air brake system: chambers, slack adjusters, valves, dryer, lines
  • Suspension, steering, wheel ends, kingpins, U-joints
  • Engine diagnostics, aftertreatment (DPF/DEF/SCR), cooling, charging
  • Transmission, PTO, clutch packs and linkages

Vacuum system

  • PD blower rebuild or exchange (Roots, Tuthill, Hibon, Gardner Denver)
  • Bearings, seals, drive belts, couplings, relief and check valves
  • Cyclone separators, filter housings, bags and screens
  • Vacuum hose, boom tubes, elbows and couplings replaced by the foot
  • Vacuum integrity test to spec before it leaves

Water system

  • High-pressure pump rebuild: seals, valves, plungers, unloader
  • Water heater / boiler service, burner, igniter, coil, thermostat
  • Hose reel motor, swivel and drive; new high-pressure hose
  • Wands, nozzles, quick-connects, freeze-protection
  • Water tank, fill valves, float valves, level gauge

Debris tank, doors & hydraulics

  • Rear door gasket and latch hardware; door and dump cylinders resealed
  • Float ball / primary shut-off, sight glass, level sensors
  • Tank interior inspection, wear plate and baffle repair, liner
  • Boom rotation motor, lift and extend cylinders, seal kits
  • Hydraulic pump, valves, hoses made to length, filters, cooler

Electrical & controls

  • Harness repair, weatherproof connectors, corroded grounds
  • Switches, relays, solenoids, sensors, interlocks, e-stops
  • Wireless remote transmitter and receiver service
  • Work lights, beacons, backup alarm and camera
  • Full function test of every control station

Compliance & handover

  • DOT annual inspection items corrected and documented
  • Fluids, filters and belts to a known baseline
  • Written punch list of what was done and what to watch
  • Operator walk-through on the truck's quirks
  • Maintenance schedule set so the refurb lasts

Refurbishments run on parts. We source OEM, aftermarket and rebuilt components for every brand, so a discontinued gasket or an obsolete blower model doesn't stall the job. See hydrovac parts sourcing.

Wrecked Vacuum Truck Repair

A hydrovac carries most of its value behind the cab. That changes the math on a wreck: a truck with a destroyed cab and a sound tank, blower and boom is often worth putting back on the road.

Damage assessment you can hand to the insurer

We inspect frame, tank, boom, blower, pump and harness after a collision or rollover and write up what is bent, what is cracked, and what still works. Adjusters get a component-level estimate instead of a shrug.

Repair what's repairable, replace what isn't

Booms get straightened or replaced, tanks get door and hinge hardware rebuilt or the tank swapped, blowers and pumps get bench-checked before anyone assumes they're scrap. We source used and rebuilt components when new doesn't make sense for the truck's age.

Frame and chassis work through trusted shops

Heavy frame straightening and cab work go to shops we've used for years. We handle everything on the vac side and put the truck back together as one working unit.

Not sure whether to repair or replace? Our hydrovac truck cost guide covers new, used and rental pricing so you can compare against a repair estimate.

Used Vacuum Truck Pre-Purchase Inspection

Before you wire money for a used hydrovac, have someone who repairs them for a living put eyes and gauges on it. A pre-purchase inspection covers:

  • Blower vacuum test, bearing play, oil condition and hours
  • Water pump pressure and flow at the wand
  • Debris tank interior, door seal, latches, float and sight glass
  • Boom rotation, lift and extend under load; cylinder drift
  • Hydraulic pump pressure, hose condition, cooler and filters
  • Engine codes, aftertreatment history, coolant and oil analysis
  • Air brakes, suspension, steering, tires and frame
  • Harness condition, control stations, remote, lighting
  • DOT inspection status and paperwork
  • A written list of what it needs and roughly what that costs
